DIY Electric Car Conversion Kits

Motor_InstallationElectric car conversion kits are hot items for those who realize that the gas guzzler will soon be on the endangered species list. Convert! Transform it. Just build your own electric car from the “ashes” of your money-draining environmentally unfriendly car or have someone do it for you such as AMP motors of Cincinnati Ohio that specialize in GM electric car conversions.

Create your own miracle with an electric vehicle conversion kit – Turn smog into clean air! Build an electric car? Sure can! EV conversions are for real. It’s truly amazing how necessity remains the mother of invention.

Well, re-invention really. Electric cars are actually the fore-runner to your gas guzzler – and the hybrid vehicle. Old technology reborn.

Oil prices will continue to rise because oil is getting more rare by the minute due to the rapidly expanding economies of China and India are quickly becoming large oil consumers. You can count on that.

Obviously we have not seen the last high priced oil. In terms of 2007 inflation adjusted dollars, the price of oil peaked on June 30, 2008 at over $143 a barrel. Before this period, the maximum inflation adjusted price was the equivalent of $95–100, in 1980.  The fuel price dip caused by lack of demand due to the global economic crisis is not here to stay, the oil producers have already adjusted their output accordingly to remove the surplus in supply…so the price of oil is only up from here! In fact it’s already back over $100 dollars a barrel and it’s not because of a thriving USA economy driving prices up. Don’t be caught with a gas-guzzler in your garage when the next oil price spike happens or the government figures out it can’t afford to keep subsidizing big oil any more, which only made sense for them to do in the first when oil was cheap and not profitable, why they are still doing it today is beyond me.

Anyway so fuel-efficient vehicles such as hybrids and EVs are rising fast in importance as peak oil prices again start to appear on the horizon.

The main issue with DIY EV conversion kits is that only a few pre-made kits actually exist as they are relatively car make/model specific.  If one is really interested in this type of project they need to track down and locate a local EV club that has experience in EV conversions and with luck can get you in touch with someone that has previously converted your same model ICE donor car.  In addition the world of electric vehicles and EV technology is currently in hyper-drive after being asleep for almost 100 years and most conventional books published about EV conversions are quickly out of date.

However, there are several DIY EV conversion ebooks available on the subject, which can be updated faster than paperback or hardcover traditional books that might be of some help such as:

Hello, I’m from the Dominican Republic and I’m really interested to make a electric car, that is the reason I make contact with you.

    This are my questions?

    1. Where could I buy the equipment to make a electric car?
    2. I want to build a electric car with 250 hp or 150 MPG?
    3. How do I put all the parts together?

Do you know of a conversion company that specializes in Toyota Prius conversions? I mean, with Prius being manufactured for more than 10 years now and having sold more than 2 million vehicles (three different models of course but common design elements), there should be a very special conversion market out there with a car that’s already half way there. It’s already got a powerful electric engine coupled to the transmission, low aerodynamic drag, a ventilated battery compartment (and plenty of extra room in the back for more batteries) and other essential EV design element, including even a safely housed high-current wiring between the battery and the motor as well as the battery charge controller that can probably be reused/re-purposed. In a regular ICE vehicle all these little things would have to be done from scratch.

Anyways, I know of companies doing plug-in conversion of Priuses, but do you guys know of someone who completely removes ICE from Priuses and converts them into fully-EV vehicles?

Another stop for those looking for EV conversions would be Gas to Electric Inc. in Santa Monica, CA… specializing in Ford Ranger conversions.
