You hit the nail on the head with this one. Since I have little time for reading blog post it was a pleasant surprise to come across this article. Most of my fitness regime revolves around cycling, however I am always seeking out to new ideas for working out and better nutrition.

I have included a link to this article. As noted above, there are some other things to consider, but I too agree you hit on the high points of the current sweet spot in eBike technology.

Two things I'd like to add:
1) mass market eBikes are turning up the quality compared to years past, though still a long way to go compared to the state of the art! Currie Technologies is one company who now has Target and WalMart $400 eBIkes with heavy steel mainly frames, basic components, SLA batteries with a reliable, decade+ old left hand chain drive design. Currie also offers Lithium batteries with hub motors at the high end IZips, comparable cost to others.

2) Upgrades of key components: many kits are "batteries not included" and allow substitution of your power source for "factory integrated" batteries. Though Lithium, especially LiFEPO4 is the rage right now, NiMH may make a comeback as batteries more like the Prius pack come available instead of small prism cells matched into an eBike pack. See Colorado Advanced Energy site for an example. A 24v/10Ahr pack on my Currie eFolder weighs less than 1/2 of the old 10Ahr pack, and takes up the space of a 6Ahr pack. Costs about 1/2 of LiFEPO4 pack. Very interesting alternative!

Best, Mark

Great article with lots of good info! We put a similar article together on how to choose an electric bike that discusses many of these points, along with more detailed info about e-bike parts and components (ie: batteries, motors, etc.). Some of this info might be helpful for your article about conversion kits. Either way... nice job and keep up the good work!

E-Bikes are great! our whole family uses them. We own a Pedego and two ampedbikes conversions.

I was a complete skeptic until we (I) bought the pedego as a birthday present for myself. I have since also made 2 ampedbikes builds with their new geared motors.

There is no way to express the feeling of riding an EV.. especially an electric bicycle. It makes me feel like a kid again. The wife and I do regular Saturday rides of over 20 miles. We are in our 50's and when we get tired we simply hit the throttle and were up to 20 mph.

I suggest everyone try an electric bicycle

There are many brands available we searched all reviews before buying.
