No Nuclear Meltdown Using Thorium

Thorium Nuclear power plants are immune to nuclear meltdown threats along with many other green-alternative energy benefits.

Thorium Nuclear power plants generate nuclear power at least in part using Thorium– such as in a liquid-fluoride thorium reactor (LFTR) instead of ones that just plutonium or uranium fuel. Thorium powered plants can’t melt down, so are infinitely safer. They can be manufactured small enough to be transported by truck and only cost a fraction to build and maintain relative to the funds required for a conventional nuclear power plants such as the one in Fukushima. Most conventional nuclear power plants are in need of immediate upgrades and/or decommissioning, which isn’t surprising since most are approximately 40+ years old, and sadly some things like nuclear power plants don’t age very gracefully, in fact they can become downright scary! Speaking of “scary” yet another advantage of Thorium nuclear plants is that the fuel can be denatured so that nuclear weapons CAN NOT be manufactured as a byproduct. So why aren’t Thorium nuclear power plants in every city? Well ask your local politician since it certainly would have been possible years ago as the USA demonstrated the feasibility of Thorium nuclear plants by operating one for years back in the 60′s at Oak Ridge National Laboratory without problems! Also the nuclear half-life of wastes produced from thorium don’t remain radioactive/dangerous to life for nearly a fraction as long as those wastes produced by conventional nuclear power plants.

The good news is that India’s NPCIL (Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited) has been making progress in the area with having developed the first of its kind Advance Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR), which has a 300 MW capacity for thorium utilization.

China has also embarked on a major race to develop liquid-fluoride thorium reactor (LFTR) technology, which makes sense since China can not afford to pay increasing costs for oil and keep their economy growing at current rates. Also being the first develop and secure the international patents for relatively safe nuclear power would be substantial in addition to owning the rights to a possible solution to help mitigate climate change.
