Required reading for EV Conversion: Convert It!

Convert It! by Michael P. Brown A Step-by-Step Manual for Converting an Internal Combustion Vehicle to Electric Power. It has been chosen for years by the Department of Energy and by numerous schools as the textbook for high school electric car conversion projects.

Convert It! should probably be required reading for anyone looking for a how-to resource for electric car conversions.

The author answers the most frequently asked questions about electric cars: How fast and what kind of range will it have? How long will the batteries last? How pollution-free are EVs? etc. Brown then provides numerous tips and tricks to make the conversion process easier and more successful, which can be easy followed step by step. The author was a professional automotive mechanic for decades and that experience along with being a retail supplier of EV conversion components and kits makes his knowledge invaluable.

The main issues with the book is that it was originally published in 1989 and thus doesn’t mention what new EV parts and components are currently available, which will now doubt have better performance and reasonable prices. Perhaps even more important is an updated list of what newer fossil-fuel cars should be considered as donor vehicles by those wishing to accomplish a DIY EV conversion.
