Summary:
Production of the Ford Transit Connect EV began in December 2010, and has has an all-electric range of up to 80 miles (130 km) with a top speed of 75 MPH (120 km/hr) and is being marketed to commercial fleet operators. The EV uses an advanced lithium-ion battery from Johnson Controls-Saft that can be charged using either a 240-volt or standard 120-volt outlet.
Ford produces the EV as a vehicle glider (without a powertrain) where it is shipped to Azure Dynamics in Oak Park, Michigan where the electric drivetrain and other components are added.
Current customers of the Ford Transit Connect EV light duty truck include: New York Power Authority, Johnson Controls, Canada Post, Southern California Edison, AT&T, Toronto Atmospheric Fund (FleetWise EV300 Program), Xcel Energy, Norwegian Post and DHL.
First year production capacity (2011) is expected to top out at approximately 1000 units, however, plans to double capacity for 2012 have already been announced.
