Summary:
The Volt: Chevy’s EV with a range extending APU (Auxiliary Power Unit), which will be available for purchase in just a few months and will come with a fully transferable eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty on its lithium battery. That’s longer than any other powertrain warranty currently offered by most Japanese or American auto manufacturers, which is quite the vote in confidence in their new technology! This warranty alone should help many first time EV buyers rest a little easier at night, whether they are use to having their batteries frozen in Alaska or cooked in Arizona. GM executives shouldn’t be losing too much sleep either as the Volt has already completed over a million miles of testing, which makes it easier to have confidence in the new battery technology.
- Volt offers an EPA-estimated 35 miles of initial EV range offering a gas-free and tailpipe emissions-free commute for about $1.50 of electricity per day
- When the battery is depleted, a small, quiet onboard gas generator creates electricity that powers your Volt as you drive for hundreds of additional miles
- Lithium-ion cells outperform nickel-metal hydride cells (found in today's hybrid vehicles) in terms of life cycle
- A liquid thermal cooling and heating system keeps the battery at a comfortable temperature as it's being charged and discharged
- Can be set to charge during off-peak hours for greater savings
- Your Volt will be fully charged in about 10 hours, depending on climate, with standard 120-volt line, or as little as 4 hours using a dedicated 240-volt line
- Some Volt owners may qualify for tax rebates on an SPX Service Solutions - installed charging unit
- Instant, smooth and seamless torque right at the wheels
- Regenerative braking captures the energy from forward motion that would otherwise be lost when the car slows or stops and then converts it into electricity, helping make Volt even more efficient to drive
- On the test track, Volt reached a top speed of 100 mph
- Free of the typical noise of the internal combustion engine, Volt offers a quiet, relaxing ride at any speed

Chevy Volt and Envision Solar charging stations become integrated partners during the Chevy Volt Unplugged tour.

According to GM the five-door, four-passenger Volt is in a class by itself and not only does it provide all the benefits of an electric vehicle but does so without the range limitations associated with other EVs in the market.

This October to promote GM’s launch of the Chevrolet Volt, a half dozen Volts are going to start a cross-country tour with stops in twelve major cities. In addition to seeing the new EVs in person, the public will be treated to an assortment of special promotional events, opportunities for test-drives and Q&A sessions with GM engineers.

I test drove one of the Chevy Volts and it really changed my mind about what you have to sacrifice to drive an electric vehicle!
@Joe
I second that, this car actually has some get up to it!
