The BMW Group has rolled out major updates to its BMW and MINI company apps, introducing new features that focus on electric mobility for both current electric vehicle (EV) owners and combustion engine drivers considering the switch to electric.

A standout addition is the “Electric Vehicle Analysis” function, designed for BMW combustion engine owners. This innovative tool allows users to simulate how an all-electric BMW would fit their driving habits. According to BMW, after 200 journeys and 2,000 km (around 1,250 miles) of driving, the app provides an analysis showing how many of those trips could have been completed on a single charge with a selected EV model.

Dirk Wiedmann, Senior Vice President of Customer and Sales Strategy, Sales Steering and Digitalization at BMW, expressed the new feature stating, “Electric vehicles can already be incorporated perfectly into the daily routine of many customers – it’s just that the majority of them haven’t tried it yet. Our app’s Electric Vehicle Analysis helps our customers to make an informed judgement in their choice of drive system.”

The feature, available for BMWs with Operating System 7 or newer, aims to address range anxiety and demonstrate the practicality of EVs in everyday use. Moreover, future updates will include evaluations of vehicle idle times and long-distance journeys, along with information on charging facilities and times.

For existing EV owners, the apps now offer enhanced route planning capabilities. Users can synchronize navigation settings between their EV and app including preferences like avoiding motorways or toll roads. The update also allows for adding individual charging stops to routes, which are then synchronized with the EV’s navigation system.

Furthermore, a new “Charging Wallet” feature has been introduced, enabling EV owners to manage preferred charging tariffs from various providers. When selecting a charging station, the app displays applicable prices for chosen tariffs, helping EV owners find the most cost-effective option.

Notably, these updates are part of BMW Group’s strategy to improve and expand app functionality with five updates released annually. Currently, the My BMW App and MINI App contain over 13 million users globally. In addition, the apps now provide information about amenities near charging stations including restaurants, cafés, and supermarkets.

Other features that the apps offers include vehicle status checks, remote locking and climate control, navigation assistance, and access to digital services. They also facilitate maintenance scheduling and provide support during servicing processes.

As BMW’s app enhancements demonstrate the company’s goal of easing the transition for drivers to electric mobility and improving the EV ownership experience, the new tools for both potential and current EV owners will aim to address common concerns and showcase the viability of EVs in everyday life.
