According to the latest Charge Point Monitor from EVMarketsReports, the European charging network has seen tremendous expansion, with an average annual growth rate of 55% between 2021 and 2024. However, experts caution that this pace may still fall short of meeting the European Union’s (EU) ambitious targets.

Moreover, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) estimates that up to 8.8 million charging points will be needed by 2030 to support the expected surge in EV adoption.

The distribution of charging points is heavily concentrated in a few key countries, where the top three include the Netherlands with 169,216 charge points (19.5% of total), Germany with 152,332 charge points, and France with 119,481 charge points. With the United Kingdom (UK) and Belgium ranked 4th and 5th respectively, these top five countries account for nearly half of all charging points in Europe.

The charging network features a variety of charger types, each with its own growth trajectory. AC chargers make up the largest portion, accounting for 84% of the network and experiencing a 10% growth from July 2023 to July 2024. DC fast chargers represent 7% of the network and have seen a 15% increase. High Power Chargers (HPCs), although constituting 10% of the network, have demonstrated a notable 25% growth.

In terms of urban EV infrastructure, Dutch cities are leading the way. Amsterdam arrives with the highest number of public charge points with 13,286, followed by London with 11,321. Rotterdam and The Hague contribute significantly as well, with 8,538 and 6,967 charge points respectively. In addition, cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg, Oslo, and Antwerp are making notable strides, reflecting the expanding EV networks across Europe.

Moreover, the majority of charging points of 63% are fully public, while 37% are semi-public. Semi-public chargers, often located on private property with conditional access, play an increasingly important role in supporting EV adoption, particularly in areas with less dense public infrastructure.

Despite the impressive progress, several challenges remain with uneven distribution with rural and remote areas are still underserved compared to urban centers. Other challenges include regulatory hurdles slowing down the installation process, the need for expansion in the electricity grid, and meeting EU targets of 8.8 million charge points by 2030.

With Europe’s achievement of surpassing 900,000 charging points, the continent’s progress marks a major step in the transition to electric mobility. As Europe pushes forward with its climate goals, the expansion of EV charging infrastructure will continue to play a pivotal role in enabling EV adoption across the continent.
