Tesla has secured a critical regulatory exemption from Transport Canada for its Cybertruck electric vehicle (EV), paving the way for its launch in the Canadian market later this year.

The Cybertruck’s exemption permits the use of the EV’s advanced steer-by-wire system, which deviates from traditional steering column requirements. According to Transport Canada, Tesla can bypass the standard minimum steering angle of ±270 degrees, a condition outlined in section 7.9.4 of Technical Standards Document No. 126. As a result, this will dismiss the need to adhere to the conventional steering column specifications.

Notably, the exemption, valid until July 18, 2029, includes conditions requiring Tesla to submit semi-annual incident reports starting in 2025. The company must also update Transport Canada on any changes to the steering system or electronic stability control (ESC) features.

With Tesla’s Cybertruck anticipated to be released in the Canadian market, the exemption is crucial for the company’s expansion plans in the country. This follows the EV’s initial rollout in the United States (U.S.) and an ongoing global tour showcasing the Cybertruck in various countries including China, Japan, Thailand, and several European and Middle Eastern nations.

Despite the exemption in Canada, Tesla is still navigating regulatory hurdles in other international markets. The Cybertruck’s unique design poses certification challenges, particularly in regions with stringent vehicle regulations including the European market. Nevertheless, the focus remains on meeting Canadian regulatory requirements and finalizing launch plans for now.

As Tesla’s acquisition of this exemption arrives successful, its Cybertruck appearing in the Canadian EV market will further solidify its position among its competitors. Canadian buyers can anticipate the Cybertruck’s debut by the end of 2024.
