Polestar has launched an innovative solution to one of electric vehicle (EV) ownership’s most challenging aspects: managing home charging efficiently and cost-effectively. The company’s new Polestar Energy app, now available in eleven European markets, designates a substantial advancement in making EV charging both more accessible and more economical for owners.

How It Works: Smart, Automated Charging

The system works by creating an intelligent bridge between the vehicle, home charging equipment, and electricity grid. Rather than requiring owners to manually monitor electricity rates and grid demand, the app automatically optimizes charging schedules to take advantage of off-peak rates and grid conditions.

In addition, this refined approach to energy management can lead to substantial savings, with Polestar estimating that users could reduce their charging costs by up to 30%, translating to potential annual savings of €300 for savvy users.

“We launched the Polestar Energy app to take the guesswork out of home charging,” explains Olivier Loedel, Head of Software Product Management at Polestar. The app’s user-friendly interface allows owners to simply input their desired charge levels and usage times, letting the system handle the complex calculations of when to charge for maximum efficiency.

Beyond just finding the cheapest charging times, the app integrates with domestic solar energy production, allowing owners to prioritize renewable energy when available. Bi-Directional Charging: The Future of EVs

The technology becomes even more compelling with the upcoming introduction of bi-directional charging capabilities for the Polestar 3 model in 2025. This advancement will transform parked vehicles into virtual power plants, capable of both drawing power from and returning it to the grid. The vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) functionality mean that cars can serve as energy storage units, helping to stabilize the electrical grid during peak demand periods and potentially providing backup power to homes.

After successful pilot programs in the United Kingdom (UK) and the Netherlands, the service has expanded to include Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Italy, and Spain. This broad European deployment comes alongside Polestar’s comprehensive charging network, which includes access to over 875,000 charging points across Europe, including Tesla’s Supercharger network.

Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller emphasizes the significance of this development stating, “As the only global premium EV brand, it’s important that we offer our customers such a compelling charging offer to make using their cars easier and more cost-effective.” He notes that the substantial cost savings possible through smart charging can significantly impact the total cost of ownership for Polestar vehicles.

Making EV Ownership More Practical

To take advantage of these features, customers need compatible hardware, which Polestar has addressed through a partnership with Zaptec. The company offers an exclusive package that includes both the necessary wallbox charging unit and installation costs, though specific pricing details have not yet been announced.

Moreover, the environmental benefits extend beyond just cost savings. By optimizing charging times to periods of lower grid demand, the system naturally gravitates toward times when the renewable energy mix in the grid is higher, resulting in reduced CO2 emissions during the vehicle’s usage phase.
